Our Work / Activation & Mobilisation

The Intergenerational Fairness Coalition

The Intergenerational Fairness Coalition is a collective of almost 40 Australian organisations that recognise the need for increased long-term thinking in Australian policymaking.

A brighter future for all Australians

A brighter future for all Australians, where long-term thinking, sustainability and equality are front of mind. We believe in the potential of pragmatic and economically-minded approaches to safeguarding Australia's future to address long-standing and emerging challenges.

We believe that recognising and honouring the sacred 65,000-year history of First Nations Peoples and cultures across the land we know as Australia today is essential to realising our vision and embracing the potential of our shared future.

Taking an intergenerational lens, embedding long-term thinking in policymaking

Our collective mission is to see an intergenerational lens embedded in Australian policymaking, supported by meaningful intergenerational engagement, data-driven measurement and accountability mechanisms.

Foundations for Tomorrow is proud to have chaired the Intergenerational Fairness Coalition since its establishment in 2023.

A call for unity, not division

Long-term thinking must be a government priority

Australians' future health and wellbeing requires the government to embed long-term thinking and apply greater priority to intergenerational fairness.

Collaboration across the spectrum drives change

Collaboration across civil society, sectors and the political spectrum is required to drive the cultural and institutional change needed to achieve intergenerational fairness in Australia.

This agenda is a call for unity

Achieving intergenerational fairness requires intergenerational collaboration and solidarity. This agenda is a call for unity, not division.

Three complementary paths to reform

01

Supporting existing initiatives

We will seek to support existing initiatives that are gaining momentum, prioritising collaboration and establishing common ground where possible.

02

Nurturing an ambitious vision

We will strive for the ambitious goal of advancing law reform that protects the interests of future generations, legislation that could establish an independent Commissioner for future generations, similar to Wales in 2015. Once momentum has been built, this includes advocating for a Parliamentary Inquiry into Intergenerational Fairness.

03

Investing in concurrent efforts

We will pursue complementary initiatives that safeguard Australia's future: improvements to the intergenerational report, a Budget Statement for future generations, and ways to embed future generations considerations into the work of Government Departments.

The Intergenerational Fairness Summit

The inaugural Intergenerational Fairness Summit was held in 2023, with keynote speaker Sophie Howe, the first Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, setting out why Australia must take the interests of future generations into account.

The Summit grew in 2024 to bring together over 100 policy leaders, experts, advocates and academics, fostering collaboration and nurturing a unified movement for intergenerational fairness, championing policy innovations to protect future generations ahead of the 2025 Australian federal election.

The Summit will be reconvened by the Intergenerational Fairness Coalition when there is adequate strategic value in bringing the movement together again.
